"There
is something for everyone in James L. Dorton City Park,"
asserted Jim Greene, assistant City Manager of Concord. "We've
really tried to respond to the community with a wide range of
recreational features."
The community park located within Afton Village is diverse with
its three tennis courts, two soccer fields, walking trail, picnic
shelters, swing sets, tot lots, and a nine-hole Frisbee golf course.
"The
City of Concord was in need of a soccer field and with the land
donated by the developers of Afton Village we were able to build
a park with two soccer fields where we can practice and program
youth soccer," Greene stated.
The walking
trail provides an excellent opportunity for a scenic walk and
tour of the park. The trail is composed of concrete and fine gravel
and beautifully winds through the trees, across two bridges over
Afton Run Creek, by the soccer fields, and around the tennis courts.
Afton Village's
developer, David Mayfield, donated 24 acres to the City of Concord
in 1996. Located adjacent to Poplar Tent Road, the City's park
will adjoin the future 27 acre YMCA park directly to the north.
Walking and jogging trails will connect the two public park systems,
creating an enormous recreational asset for both the Afton Village
residents and the community at large.
